Pete Saunders nicknamed Speedy first took to his bike in earnest on a speedway track in 1967 at Rye House, following that he was to be seen riding the following tracks. 1968 Reading, 1968 Oxford, 1969 Crewe on loan from Oxford. Then for 1970, 1971 & 1972 at Peterborough also on loan from Oxford. Asked
about his achievements he includes riding in the Knockout Cup Final in
1969 for Crewe and at Peterborough in 1972 being captain of the team
that came third in the division 2. When Pete was asked what he was most proud of he decided that he would rather say that he felt the most privileged to have been part of speedway when it was the second most popular spectator sport. He listed his worst memory as joining the "High Flyers Club at Peterborough" can only guess at what he meant exactly but would imagine that those who are riders or ex-riders will understand but the rest or us mortals can only guess, some I would think will be more colourful than others. Pete Saunders retired from speedway riding in 1972 and is still involved with the sport as a committee member of the World Speedway Riders Association. JH |
