Clive Hitch was born in England and started his riding career at Rye House in 1958, yet another who benefited from the policy of the Rye House track to encourage the young rider. Clive continued his profession, riding for the Chiswick Nomads and then the Rayleigh Rockets, leaving the Rockets for a brief visit to Exeter in 1961, at the time Exeter had a team depleted by injury, they welcomed him hoping he would help rescue what was becoming a serious situation for them. Imagine how delighted they must have been when on this first night riding for Exeter he scored 8 and soon after that in partnership with Geoff Mudge he was equal winner of a Best Pairs competition. Sadly for Exeter his trip to the west of the country was short lived as he returned to Rayleigh moving on to Middlesbrough. His career continued with teams at Halifax, Long Eaton, Coventry and Swindon. Clive
Hitch known by many as 'Clive the Would imagine that Clive was very proud when his son Martin took to the track and was doing well and very sad when Martins career was cut short just as he was about to take a team place at Birmingham by a road crash. Apart from that sadness his worst memory of his own riding career was being a rider in the race at Glasgow when Sven Kassa was killed. He would also like to forget, but can't, his crash at Rayleigh in 1960. JH (Webmaster)
