Chris Morton MBE , known to many as Mighty Mort or Young Mort was born in the United Kingdom and began his riding career in the second half at Crew back in 1972. He continued his illustrious career riding as a team member at Elesmere Port and, of course, Belle Vue, the club that I believe most of us associate him with most. Chris has achieved so much during his time in speedway but some of the most impressive achievements include 128
Caps for England, just imagine 128, wonder he had time to do anything
else, however he did, he remembers with particular pleasure winning the British
League Riders Championship in 1984, in 1974 becoming the British Junior
Champion forward again to 1984 when with Peter Collins he won the World
Pairs Championship. In 1980 World Team Cup Champion, also in 1980
Intercontinental Champion. In all he achieved 7 World Final appearances. Chris tells me the riding achievement he is most proud of is winning the World Pairs Championship in 1984 that was the one with Peter Collins. One would guess he is also very proud to be awarded the MBE in 1992. Retiring from riding in 1990 at the comparatively young age of 34, despite most of speedway begging and cajoling him to stay he knew it was time to stop riding as he felt that because of past injury and physical damage he was unable to continue to perform to his own high standards. The Mighty Mort is however still involved in Speedway and is now the Commercial Manager at Belle Vue the scene of some of his career highlights.
